Lagos govt places ban on Styrofoam, single-use plastics
The Lagos State Government has declared that single-use plastics, particularly non-biodegradable Styrofoam, will no longer be allowed to be used or distributed within the state.
The decision to outlaw these goods was made in response to the environmental harm that these plastics are posing to the state's heavily populated areas.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, made this revelation in a tweet on Sunday, January 21, 2024, on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Tokunbo Wahab in his post said, ‘’Following the menace which single-use plastics especially non-biodegradable Styrofoam are causing on the environment, the Lagos State government through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources is hereby announcing a ban on the usage and distribution of Styrofoam and other single-use plastics in the State with immediate effect.’’
The commissioner continued by explaining that, despite routine cleaning and clearing of the drains with massive amounts of debris, Styrofoam's indiscriminate distribution and consumption regularly fill up the majority of drainage channels in the state.
