Lagos govt reopens Alaba Rogo market
Alaba Rago Market in Ojo, which was closed last week due to serious environmental violations and carelessness, has reopened thanks to the efforts of the Lagos State Government.
In a statement released in Lagos on Monday, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the city's commissioner for the environment and water resources, announced the market's reopening.
The commissioner stated that the market was reopened following the dealers' fulfilment of certain requirements for the state's locked markets to be reopened.
He warned that the authorities would keep cracking down on dirty marketplaces and urged all markets to prioritise hygiene and environmental requirements.
“The state government has opened Alaba Rago Market, Ojo, after it was sealed for gross environmental infractions and negligence.
“We want to appeal to other markets to take seriously the issue of cleanliness, to make the state cleaner and livable for all,†Wahab said.
He restated the state's commitment to upholding environmental regulations.
Wahab also underlined that the reopening of Alaba Rago Market ought to act as a wake-up call for all parties involved in the market to prioritize sanitation and hygiene.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, spoke about the reopening and stressed the value of market authorities, traders, and pertinent government agencies working together to maintain a clean and healthy market environment.
Gbadegesin pointed out that the zero-tolerance policy of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's government was still in place, thus the market's reopening should not be interpreted as a softness towards environmental breaches.
He continued by saying that the market is crucial to the state's efforts to achieve environmental sustainability.
