Lagos govt seeks partnership to improve education

On Wednesday, the Lagos State administration asked for cooperation in the educational field to develop a new strategy and guarantee increased learning quality and best practices in its schools.

Lagos State Commissioner of Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, explained that the state has significantly improved in the area of ensuring quality education with a sustained and robust partnership with important stakeholders during a speech at the Lagos State Education Conference 2023, which was organized in collaboration with Casio and SKLD Integrated Services Ltd.

According to Adefisayo, the state has made investments in digital innovation for math education and other courses that call for computation and problem-solving.

She emphasized that the collaboration with Casio has had a significant impact on the learning results and that the goal of the education conference was to examine prospects for enhancing education between the public and private sectors.

“The partnership had been fruitful for us because our WAEC results went up almost three times over the period we are talking about with.

“More students pass mathematics and we attribute some of that to the training the teachers received because it’s not just training on the use of calculators but training on making a more classroom-engaging environment where students are motivated to learn because they are learning something relevant to them.

“It’s been a great partnership and we are open to partnership especially where they affected our children because we have to start building them up with the leadership competencies they will need to excel in the future,” she said.

She went on to say that going forward, the state wants additional partners to advance mathematics and enhance mathematics, adding that the prior partnership to do so for the English language has been successful as it looks ahead for as many partnerships as it can.

According to her “We are not asking them to come and fund what we are doing, we are asking them if it’s their skills, competencies and time they can volunteer and It’s something we will continue to reinforce going forward”

Mr. Hamza Aoun, assistant manager of Casio Middle East and Africa FZE's education business and marketing division, mentioned working with the Lagos State Ministry of Education to prepare instructors and students for using calculators in the classroom.

He reaffirmed that the partnership's major focus remains on using technology to improve students' learning and critical thinking, stating the effort will serve to inform and improve students' performance.
