Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor of Lagos State, announced that the state would add 220 more trucks to its garbage evacuation fleet.

This is just two months after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu declared that 150 compactor vehicles will soon be delivered to the state to address waste evacuation.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday at the state's monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Festac, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Hamzat made this statement.

The additional trucks, he said, would complement the current Private Sector Participation rubbish collection system.

According to him, the vehicles will assist the government in handling the increasing amount of rubbish produced around the state due to population increase.

“The state government will be bringing in another 220 trucks to make sure that we supplement our PSP. What we need our people to also do is to make sure that they patronise their PSP, not the cart pushers, because they are not organised. You don’t know where the waste is ending up,” he said.

In response to a query about Lagos' garbage problem, Hamzat stated that the state's growing population meant that more waste was produced every day, necessitating the cooperation of its citizens for efficient waste management.

“A lot of people are coming to Lagos, and therefore they generate waste. So part of what you can see that we are doing is that we are getting many more trucks to actually go and evacuate,” he said.

He emphasised that citizens had an obligation to make sure that rubbish was disposed of appropriately, pointing out that trash placed in canals might impede water movement and exacerbate flooding.

With the goal of having locals clean their surroundings at least once a month, the deputy governor stated that the state administration was pushing communities throughout Lagos to arrange frequent environmental cleanliness activities.
