Landlady arrested for pouring hot water on tenant in Anambra

Amaka Okonkwo, a landlord, is being held in detention at the Nimo police station after she is accused of throwing boiling water mixed with pepper on her tenant, Imabong William, following a dispute regarding an increase in rent.

It was learned that the event took place late on Thursday in Enugwu-Ukwu in Njikoka Local Government Area, Anambra State.

The victim was requested to leave the house by the suspect because she was unable to pay the new rent, despite the fact that her lease had already expired in July, according to an eyewitness.

The Akwa Ibom State native who was injured is being treated at Zion Hospital in Nawfia right now.

She said, “I requested more time from my landlady to enable me to get a new place, but unfortunately while I was washing my clothes on Thursday, the landlady poured hot water mixed with pepper on me from behind.”

Chiegbunam Nwosu, the community's female president-general, and Florence Okoye denounced the incident and said that the community did not support the heinous treatment meted out to the victim.

The women also went to the Nimo Police Division, where the DPO gave them the assurance that the case would be given to the state CID for further investigation, maintaining community peace and order as a result.

Ebere Okonkwo, the suspect's husband, who was questioned after being seen in the hospital on Saturday, denied any involvement in his wife's activities.

Okonkwo said that despite being at home when the incident occurred, he was unaware of his wife's plans for their tenant.

Ify Obinabo, the commissioner for women's and social welfare, responded to the development on Saturday by thanking the Enugwu-Ukwu women for their quick action in resolving the issue and for apprehending the offender.

The commissioner expressed disappointment in the occurrence and vowed to bring the victim's case to justice.

She cautioned that anyone found guilty of assault of any kind will not be treated lightly by the state government and gave the public advice to always report crimes and misdemeanours through the proper channels for prompt intervention.
