LASTMA seizes 173 vehicles for illegal parking, road obstructions
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), 48 privately owned cars and 125 commercial buses were seized for egregious infractions, such as parking without permission and causing serious obstructions to the road.
This was stated in a statement released in Lagos on Thursday by Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, who oversaw the operations.
According to Bakare-Oki, the enforcement initiative was created to help vehicles move freely and restore traffic discipline.
“This sweeping crackdown was executed across notorious gridlock-prone corridors such as Idumota, Ijaye Street, Martins, Ereko, Nnamdi Azikiwe by Tom Jones, Ebute-Ero, Oyingbo, Ijora, Adeniji Adele, and Iddo.
“This rigorous enforcement underscores LASTMA’s unwavering commitment to eradicating chronic traffic congestion and mitigating reckless road practices, particularly among commercial transport operators and private motorists who flout established regulations,” he said.
According to Bakare-Oki, many of the criminals were arrested performing dangerous actions including driving against the flow of traffic and making dangerous reversals from Iddo to Idumota in order to pick up passengers.
According to him, this was a careless move that caused several traffic accidents and needless fatalities.
According to Bakare-Oki, the program targeted unapproved garages that had long been the cause of unsolvable traffic jams, causing excessive misery for both locals and commuters.
