Law Society of Nigeria, a new association of lawyers emerges in Nigeria

In contrast to the Nigeria Bar Body, another professional association of attorneys has been founded.

The group, known as the Law Society of Nigeria, is led by Mr Kunle Ogunba, SAN.

This information may be found in a statement made on Sunday by Mr. Douglas Ogbankwa, the LSN's national publicity secretary.

The Nigerian Bar Association, established in 1933, had previously been the only organisation in Nigeria that governed legal professionals.

In the statement, Ogbankwa said that the LSN was founded in an effort to reframe the principles of the profession's founders.

The LSN was described by Ogbankwa as the "new sheriff in town."

He described the legal profession in Nigeria as having a tortuous history stretching from “the sublime to the ridiculous”.

According to Ogbankwa, the LSN was created to maintain Nigerian legal practise in line with global best practises.

“In redefining the ideas of the founding fathers of the legal profession in Nigeria, the Law Society of Nigeria, a new professional association of lawyers called to the Nigerian Bar, has been established.

“This is in keeping with international best practices, which allow for an alternative to ensure that lawyers thrive within the realm of those they have shared values with,” he said.

Ogbankwa claims that the pro tem National Executive Committee of the LSN informed the Body of Benchers of the formation of the association and the names of its national officers in a letter dated October 24.

“The LSN, with membership spread all over Nigeria, exists to empower the legal profession with quality member services, facilitate access to justice, maintain and advance the cause of justice, and promote the rule of law through advocacy and good governance,” he stated.

He listed the LSN's top executives as follows: President Ogunba (SAN), Mr. Nimi Walson-Jack, Mr. Abdulqadir Alhaji Sani, Mr. Olasupo Ojo, Secretary for Welfare, and Mrs. Chioma Ferguson, Treasurer.

Other executive members are Mr. Hassan Sheriff, Assistant Publicity Secretary; Mrs. Alice Ogaku Awonugba, Assistant Secretary; Mr. Zara Umar Yakubu, Financial Secretary; and Mr. Douglas Ogbankwa, Publicity Secretary.

“It is on the verge of uncommon and necessary reforms in our legal annals and the ageless egalitarian posture on freedom to lawfully associate, that the LSN also writes your distinguished body, introducing herself,” he stated.
