Mali elects new interim prime minister
In the midst of rumors that civilian lawmaker Choguel Maiga has been admitted to the hospital, Mali has named a new interim prime minister. (BBC)
Col. Abdoulaye Maiga, the new prime minister and no connection, was previously the minister of territory administration and the spokesperson for the executive branch.
Early in August, the French-based Jeune Afrique magazine reported that Choguel Maiga had experienced a stroke; however, one of his advisors reportedly refuted this to the news agency Reuters.
In a dispute over Malian security and democracy, Col. Abdoulaye Maiga has been a vocal opponent of France, Mali's former colonial power, accusing Paris of being patronizing and neo-colonial. This is according to the French website France24.
In 2021, the military took over and installed Col. Assimi Gota as leader of the nation.
Col. Abdoulaye Maiga's appointment implies that the military currently holds the two top government positions in Mali.
