Man arrested for allegedly relocating children without mother's consent

Muffat Inyang, 49, was charged by the Lagos police on Friday in an Ikeja Chief Magistrates' Court for allegedly moving his kids to a different state without getting their mother's permission.

The defendant, who resides in the Oshodi neighbourhood of Lagos, committed the act on October 30, 2023, at around noon in December, according to the prosecutor, John Iberedem, who testified in court.

Iberedem claimed that the defendant took his three children out of their biological mother's custody and placed them in the care of a third party in Akwa Ibom.

He added that even though he and the children's mother did not live together, Inyang behaved in a way that may have led to a breakdown of peace.

The prosecutor said that the acts violated Section 168 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2015. There is a three-month maximum sentence for violating this clause.

Nonetheless, the defendant entered a not guilty plea to the charge that was presented against him.

The defendant was granted bail in the amount of N200,000, together with two sureties in an equivalent amount, by Chief Magistrate Mrs. E. Kubeinje. The matter was postponed until October 16 by Kubeinje for discussion.
