Man shot dead by police officer in Lagos

Gafaru Buraimoh, 31, of Land Estate, Ajah, was shot and killed by a policeman working under the Ajah Divisional Police Lagos State Command.

When leaving SkyMall on Tuesday at around 10:00 p.m., Gafaru Buraimoh was struck by a stray bullet.

It was discovered that the shooting that killed Buraimoh took place when Ajah police from the Ajiwe Divisional Police raided individuals selling petrol on the illicit market at the Ajiwe filling station.

However, unrest began when a black marketer refused to let the police impound his fuel.

The police were enraged by his resistance and began intermittently opening fire.

Muyideen, the brother who has since passed away, told Vanguard that the event took place yesterday at about 10:00 pm.

“The police wanted to arrest those that are selling black markets and they started shooting because they refuse to allow them to impound their fuel.

Unfortunately, Buraimoh was coming out of SkyMall when he was mistakenly hit by a stray bullet.”

In his lament, the deceased's father stated, "I was at home when they contacted me this morning, asking me to come, saying my son had been shot." Dpo CSP Mustapha promised to look into the situation.

The Lagos State Police Command's SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police public relations officer, confirmed the occurrence and stated that the officer who fired the shot, an Inspector of Police, was promptly disarmed and has since been arrested while a thorough investigation is being conducted.

In further explanation, Hundeyin stated that the family has since been informed about and in contact with by the Lagos State Police Command via the Area Commander, Elemoro, and Divisional Police Officer, Ajah.

The Command, while commiserating with the family of the deceased over the avoidable and most unfortunate incident, gives assurances that the already commenced investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be brought to a speedy and conclusive end, while equally ensuring that justice is served”, Hundeyin added.
