Mangu crisis in Plateau leaves eight dead, several others injured
According to Daily Trust, there were eight confirmed deaths in the new violence that broke out in Mangu town, Mangu Local Government Area, Plateau State, on Monday.
Following the violence in the area, Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who is from the unstable LGA, issued a 24-hour curfew in Mangu and its surroundings.
While some people have reportedly died and others have been hurt, many others have reportedly escaped from their homes and cannot be located.
The development was corroborated by government, security, and religious leaders. Some sources claimed that the cause of the mayhem was attempts at livestock rustling that were foiled, leading to widespread destruction.
“However, typical of such incidences, hoodlums and miscreants tried to seize the opportunity to create havoc, which is one of the things that escalated and led to the imposition of a state of emergency in Mangu,†General Gakji said.
Assailants from both sides of the dispute allegedly set churches, mosques, and residential homes on fire.
Speaking about the latest events, Malam Adamu Abdulsalam, the Deputy Chairman of Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI), Mangu LGA, informed one of our correspondents yesterday that the incident resulted in the burning of six mosques, including the Juma'at mosque in Anguwan Dawo.
“As I am talking to you now, we have eight dead bodies in the mosque. But we don’t know if we will recover more casualties tomorrow because there is a curfew in the town. We are going to bury the dead tomorrow (today) by the special grace of God,†he said.
