Melinda French Gates says marriage to Bill Gates became unhealthy following his affair
Melinda French Gates is opening up about her divorce from billionaire businessman Bill Gates in a new interview with CBS News anchor Gayle King.
The former couple announced their separation last year following revelations that Bill Gates had an affair with a Microsoft staffer in 2019.
"I certainly believe in forgiveness, so I thought we had worked through some of that," French Gates told King in the interview, which is set to air on Thursday. "It wasn't one moment or one specific thing that happened. There just came a point in time where there was enough there that I realized it just wasn't healthy, and I couldn't trust what we had."
French Gates said that she cried about the separation "for many days" in the immediate aftermath, "days where I'm literally laying on the floor and the carpet...thinking, 'How can this be? How can I get up? How am I gonna move forward?'" She said she also felt angry and that it's "part of the grieving process."
"You're grieving a loss of something you thought you had and thought you had for your lifetime," French Gates told King.
The philanthropist and former computer scientist said that although the process has been painful, she feels like she's "turning a page in the chapter now" and is excited about the future.
The couple, whose divorce was finalized in August after 27 years of marriage, still work together as co-chairs of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which they founded in 2000.
