Migrants arrested following fatal stabbing of local man in Tunisia
Three African immigrants have been detained as suspects in the fatal stabbing of a local man in the seaside city of Sfax in Tunisia.
Faouzi Masmoudi, a spokesman for the city's prosecutor, said the victim, who was in his early 40s, was stabbed late on Monday amid a brawl between locals and migrants from sub-Saharan Africa.Â
The three suspects, according to Masmoudi, are from Cameroon. Police remained watch outside the home of the African migrants after the arrests out of concern for retaliation.
After months of rising tensions between migrants and Tunisians, the incident happened.Â
Locals in Sfax, the second-largest city in Tunisia, routinely protest the migrants' presence there. Sfax serves as a departure point for many migrants who want to travel to Italy. President Kais Saied's accusations that "hordes" of illegal immigrants were bringing violence, crime, and "unacceptable practices" in February led to an increase in racially motivated attacks on immigrants and international students.
Police detained three Tunisians in late May on suspicion of killing a Beninian immigrant with a knife.Â
