Mikel Obi Begins Talent Hunt Programme
Former Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi says the Back2Base talent hunt, taking place June 9-11 at the University of Lagos Sports Center, Yaba, will not just be for footballers. Mikel, who announced at a press conference in Lagos during the unveiling of the three-day event, added that rising basketball players and tennis stars would also have opportunities to showcase their talents. “It's an opportunity for us to give back to the community; First of all, we have to recognize that there is so much talent waiting to be discovered in this country," said the 35-year-old. “So with the Back2Base project, we hope to help showcase these talents “The first edition starts in Lagos, but we hope to carry it across the country afterwards. It's going to be a sensational time for the kids, not just in soccer, but in basketball and tennis as well." Mikel noted that as a youth ambassador, it is his duty to help boys with opportunities that would bring a smile not only to them but also to their parents. “It means a lot to me because I remember growing up in Jos as a kid and was just lucky to be discovered.
"Our goal is not only to send the talent we discover abroad but even to see how it can be of use in the domestic scene as well." According to PUNCH, the talent scouting program would last three days, the fourth day is reserved for an exclusive dinner with Mikel, along with the athletes who would be spotted during practice.
