Motorists face three-day diversion in Lagos for Independence Bridge repair works
The Federal Ministry of Works is starting urgent repairs on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island, and the Lagos State Government has announced a three-day traffic diversion on the bridge from Friday, October 16, to Sunday, October 18, 2026.
In a statement, the government said that the repairs would include resurfacing the asphalt and that some parts of the bridge would need to be partially closed in order to continue the work while still allowing traffic.
The asphalt work is planned to start at nite on Friday, October 16, and continue both during the day and at nite on Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.
One lane will remain open to allow drivers to get to their destinations while sections of the bridge's inbound and outbound lanes are partially closed one at a time to reduce traffic disruption.
“Motorists are urged to plan their movement and make use of alternative routes to connect their desired destinations for the duration of the repairs,” the statement said.
The statement claims that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will send out officers to control traffic flow in the impacted area and minimize disruption while repairs are being made.
Throughout the repairs, the government also asked drivers to be patient, follow traffic laws, and assist with traffic control measures.
