MTN increases data prices by 50%
MTN, the biggest telecom provider in Nigeria, has started implementing a 50% pricing increase that was authorised by the Nigerian Communications Commission in January.
For the time being, call and SMS rates are unaffected by the change, which is seen in the new data plan prices.
In an interview with our journalist on Tuesday, a top MTN executive who wishes to remain anonymous confirmed the situation.
“Yes, we’ve started updating our price lists.
“However, this process is gradual, and we haven’t completed it for all products yet”, the source said.
A number of data plans are the main targets of the price changes. For example, a 1.8GB plan that used to cost N1,000 per month has replaced the 1.5GB plan that used to cost N1,500.
The price of the 20GB plan has gone up from N5,500 to N7,500, and the 15GB plan has gone up from N4,500 to N6,500. The increases have been significantly more pronounced for larger data bundles.
According to the new list, the price of the 600GB 90-day plan has increased from N75,000 to N120,000, while the 1.5 terabyte 90-day plan has increased from N150,000 to N240,000.
