Three alcohol production businesses in Ota, Ogun State, have been officially shut down by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for allegedly breaking the federal government's prohibition on making alcoholic beverages in sachets and PET bottles.

According to an Agency statement, Kunke Ojo, Assistant Director of NAFDAC's Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, was in charge of the sting operation.

NAFDAC reported that its team discovered multiple infractions throughout the impacted factories during the enforcement exercise.

According to the Agency, when its representatives visited the first plant last Friday, they discovered a lot of PET bottles and sachet alcohol in active manufacturing.

“The factory was initially put on hold. However, during a follow-up visit, officials discovered that the sachet products had been secretly removed from the premises.

“NAFDAC has flagged this as a serious violation, as the products were already under regulatory enforcement."

The second company (name withheld) was purportedly captured by NAFDAC's enforcement team producing sachet alcoholic beverages in violation of the federal ban.

The Agency further stated that millions of PET bottles and sachet packing materials were seized for destruction when it inspected the third company (name withheld) in January and put 22 production machines on hold.

The firm allegedly breached the seals and restarted the equipment to resume making sachet alcoholic drinks during this most recent inspection, according to NAFDAC officials.
