Naira Scarcity: Residents attack bank in Edo
The persistent shortage of naira notes throughout the nation has prompted citizens of Benin, the capital of Edo state, to go to the streets in protest.
Residents in the state capital stormed banks and ignited bonfires on main roadways, according to a witness who spoke to TheCable.
A protester-infuriated branch of Access Bank Plc was set on fire.
Some of them allegedly made attempts to break into the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) state branch in Benin, which is situated along Akpakpava Road, the city's main commercial thoroughfare.
This development occurs just after the Supreme Court scheduled a hearing for February 22 to hear the consolidated lawsuits filed by 10 states regarding the CBN's naira redesign policy.
The court added the states of Katsina, Lagos, Cross Rivers, Ogun, Ondo, Ekiti, and Sokoto as co-plaintiffs in the lawsuit contesting the Federal government's naira redesign strategy.
Similar to this, the Supreme Court sided with the states of Edo and Bayelsa in backing the federal government's implementation of the naira redesign program.
