National Mosque gets first Igbo imam in Abuja
Professor Iliyasu Usman is the first Igbo Muslim to be appointed as an imam at the Abuja National Mosque by its administration.
On Friday, today, at Jumm'at prayer, Usman will deliver his first khutbah (sermon), which will be a momentous occasion for the Muslim community in Nigeria.
Many people have praised this appointment, particularly the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), which sees it as evidence of Usman's dedication to Islamic leadership and study.
In a statement, SEMON commended the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs' (NSCIA) inclusivity, which is led by Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General.
In addition to being a significant personal achievement for Usman, SEMON underlined that this appointment is a divine obligation to guide the Muslim community in devotion and service to Allah.
The group said it hoped his leadership would strengthen the Igbo Muslim community and promote harmony among Nigeria's Muslim community as a whole.
The statement reads, “We, the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), extend our heartfelt congratulations to Professor Ilyasu Usman on your recent appointment as an Imam of the National Mosque, Abuja.
“This prestigious role is not only a testament to your unwavering dedication and scholarly excellence but also a divine blessing and responsibility to lead the Ummah in worship and service to Allah.
“We pray that Allah (SWT) grants you the wisdom, strength, and steadfastness to discharge this sacred duty with diligence, integrity, and humility. May your leadership inspire unity, peace, and piety.”
