NDLEA apprehends 50-year-old businessman with 700grams of cocaine at Lagos airport
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 50-year-old Nigerian businessman who is based in Brazil on suspicion of importing 700g of cocaine.
Mr. Femi Babafemi, the spokesperson for the NDLEA, stated in an Abuja statement on Sunday.
According to Babafemi, the suspect was apprehended and held by agency agents at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, on Friday, November 29.
He claimed that after 35 years of living in Brazil, the suspect brought the cocaine home with him.
He said that this was discovered after NDLEA agents arrested him.
According to Babafemi, the suspect was taken into custody at the Lagos airport's E-Arrival Hall after returning from a trip operated by Ethiopia Airlines via Addis Ababa from São Paulo, Brazil.
“When he was taken for body scan, the result confirmed that the suspect had foreign objects concealed in his stomach.
“As a result, he was placed under excretion observation during which he expelled 29 wraps of substances that tested positive to cocaine weighing 700grams.
“In his statement, the suspect claimed he operates an African store in Brazil where he sells provisions, shoes and clothes.”
He clarified that he purchased the illegal shipment in Sao Paulo with the intention of reselling it in Nigeria in order to raise a sizable sum of money to expand his company.
