NDLEA arraigns four for illicit drug trafficking
Four hard drug syndicates were charged by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Thursday with illegally importing prohibited narcotics before a Federal High Court in Lagos State.
Ogunmeru Oluwafunsho, 49; Adewale Adegbeti, 42; Adeleke Abdulrazaq, 43; and Dairo Quam, 22, are the defendants who were arraigned before Justice Daniel Osiagor.
They are charged with two offences that relate to conspiracy and the illicit export of drugs that were brought out by the NDLEA.
The defendants were detained on March 10, 2023, at the SAHCO import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State, while cargo was being cleared for entry on an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Johannesburg, South Africa, via Addis Ababa, according to the prosecutor, Augustine Nwagu.
Approximately 11.90 kilograms of heroin and 500 grams of cannabis sativa were allegedly illegally and unlawfully exported into the nation by all of the defendants, according to him.
The defendants, however, entered a not-guilty plea to the accusations.
Nwagu requested a trial date after they entered a not-guilty plea and urged the court to hold them in custody pending the outcome of the charge against them.
Benson Ndakara and Uche Okoronkwo, the defendants' attorneys, persuaded the court to grant bail to their clients despite the fact that two of the defendants had medical conditions that the prison system was unable to treat.
