NEC endorses 90-day plan to reduce cost of living

A 90-day economic action plan to lower living expenses, increase food affordability, and draw investment to Nigeria has been approved by the National Economic Council.

The Federal Ministry of Finance put forth the plan, which was approved on Thursday at the council's 161st meeting, which Vise President Kashim Shettima virtually chaired.

Food affordability, tax harmonization, high-impact project completion, investment bottleneck resolution, and regulated household support are the plan's five priority areas, according to a statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications.

Additionally, the council approved the creation of a national dashboard to monitor projects nationwide, with a focus on accountability, transparency, and reporting on the use of fuel subsidy removal proceeds.

Speaking at the meeting, Shettima urged state governors and other pertinent government agencies to make sure that Nigerians' living conditions improve as a result of President Bola Tinubu's economic reforms.

According to him, the effectiveness of economic policies should be gaged by how they affect people's everyday lives, such as their ability to obtain reasonably priced transportation, healthcare, work opportunities, and financial stability.

“The first dividend of prosperity should be the confidence to plan a life. Our task is to make such confidence less dependent on fortune,” the vice president said.
