Nick Carter accused of raping fan in new lawsuit
In a new case, Nick Carter is charged with raping a young autistic admirer. Carter has refuted the charges.
Carter has been sued by Shannon "Shay" Ruth, 39, who claims that he sexually assaulted her. She claimed that the Backstreet Boys member sexually assaulted her in 2001 when she was 17 years old during a news conference she held alongside her attorneys via a Facebook livestream.
During the news conference, the woman stated, "The last 21 years have been filled with agony, uncertainty, anger, embarrassment, and self-harm that are a direct result of Nick Carter raping me.
"Despite the fact that I have cerebral palsy and am autistic, I think Nick Carter's actions and words to me have had the biggest and longest-lasting effects on my life.
I recall him calling me a "retarded b——" and grabbing me after the rape, leaving marks on my arm.
Mark J. Boskovich, the woman's attorney, pointed out that the complaint against Carter also included the claims of three other women.
Shay is determined to bring Carter to justice because of Nick Carter's long history of mistreating women, according to Boskovich. She considers it worthwhile to defend other women.
Ruth claimed that the reason she waited so long to come forward was that she was afraid of being "thrown in jail" for the alleged sexual assault.
Carter's lawyer, Michael Holtz, refuted the charges in a statement that was made available to Fox News Digital.
"This claim about an incident that supposedly took place more than 20 years ago is not only legally meritless but also entirely untrue," Holtz wrote.
"Unfortunately, for several years now, Ruth has been manipulated into making false allegations about Nick – and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time. No one should be fooled by a press stunt orchestrated by an opportunistic lawyer – there is nothing to this claim whatsoever, which we have no doubt the courts will quickly realize," he continued.
This isn't the first time Carter has been accused of sexual assault; in 2017, Melissa Schuman, a member of the pop girl band VOX, also asserted that the singer had raped her.
Carter denied the allegation at the time, saying, "Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual. We went on to record a song and perform together, and I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally."
Due to the passing of the statute of limitations, prosecutors decided not to press charges against Carter at the time.
"The reporting party alleged that, in 2003, she was the victim of a sexual assault perpetrated by the suspect in his apartment...," prosecutors said. "The statute of limitations expired in 2013. Therefore, an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence is not warranted, and the matter is declined."
In a quarrel between the two at the time, Aaron Carter, Carter's brother, once called Nick a "serial rapist" and compared him to Jeffrey Epstein in a series of tweets.
In the days leading up to his passing on November 5, Aaron wanted to mend his relationship with his brother. He expressed his regret to the pop star in a podcast interview at the time.
