Nicolas Maduro declared winner of Venezuela presidential election
The results of Venezuela's presidential election have been announced, with President Nicolas Maduro emerging victorious.
Thus, he is expected to serve as president three times. With 51% of the vote, Maduro won the election that was held on Sunday, July 28, according to the national electoral commission.
The outcome defied several exit polls that predicted an opposition victory following accusations of misconduct by the Maduro administration, which clearly turned the majority of the populace against him.
The poll's results showed that Edmundo Gonzalez, the opposition candidate, who was largely predicted to win as the election moved into the late hours of Sunday, had only received 44% of the vote.
In response to his contentious win, Maduro declared that his reelection is a victory for stability and peace.
Despite the apparent sense of popular mistrust and potential widespread opposition, he promptly said that he would sign a document to convene a nationwide conversation on Monday.
The opposition is already full of complaints that the nation's National Electoral Council operated more like a tool of the state than a neutral, independent organisation. Voters had selected a change, the opposition had claimed previously.
Edmundo Gonzalez said in a post on X not long before the results were announced, “The results cannot be hidden. The country has peacefully chosen a change.”
