Nigeria gets new meningitis vaccine

Nigeria is the first nation to get the new MenFive meningitis vaccine from the worldwide stockpile supported by the Vaccine Alliance. The United Nations Children's Fund arranged for the vaccine to be shipped to Nigeria.

Gombe reported six deaths from meningitis last week, while Yobe isolated 206 people after documenting 20 deaths.

As of March 3, 2024, 82 local government units in 22 states have reported 1,402 suspected cases, 101 confirmed cases, and 123 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 9.4% since October 2023, according to data received from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Based on the data, the age group most affected is five to fourteen years old, followed by fifteen to twenty-nine years old.

Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Gombe, and Katsina are estimated to be responsible for 94% of Nigeria's cases.

The World Health Organisation states that respiratory and throat secretions can spread meningitis from person to person.

The meninges, the delicate lining that encircles the brain and spinal cord, are infected.
