Nigeria recorded 77, 000 new HIV infections, 43, 000 deaths in 2022— UNAIDS
According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Nigeria saw 43,000 AIDS-related deaths and 77,000 new HIV infections in 2022.
The revelation was made by the organization's National Programme Officer, Doris Ogbang, on Tuesday in Abuja during the UN system's observance of World AIDS Day (WAD).
According to her, women made up 60% of newly diagnosed HIV cases in Nigeria, followed by men (40%), children (29%), and young people (15–24 years old) (17%).
According to her, 1.8 million adults (92%) and 160,000 children (8%) in Nigeria are among the 1.9 million people living with HIV.
According to Ogbang, there were an estimated 1.3 million new HIV infections worldwide in 2022, with 54% of cases being in males and 46% in females.
She claimed that eliminating disparities and combating stigma and discrimination against those who are afflicted with the illness are essential to ending AIDS.
Prioritising HIV prevention, integration, and response sustainability was necessary, she continued.
The Senior Strategic Information Adviser spoke on behalf of UNAIDS Country Representative Dr. Leo Zekeng, who stressed the significance of communities spearheading the nation's HIV response.
