Nigeria troops destroy more IPOB camps
The illegal Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its violent Eastern Security Network (ESN) have once more had some of their camps destroyed by Nigerian army troops in different regions of Anambra State, in southeast Nigeria.
In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, the army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, said that during separate operations in the state, the military killed one IPOB combatant and seized another.
The actions, according to Mr. Nwachukwu, a brigadier-general, were conducted out by 302 Regiment soldiers working with the Anambra Vigilante Group under the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army.
The united squad, according to the army spokesperson, demolished certain IPOB and ESN camps in Oroma and Umuewelum Anam, two localities in the state's Anambra West Local Government Area.
“The troops raided the identified camps on Sunday 23 July 2023, in an effort to curb the illicit activities of the fighters in the communities,†Mr Nwachukwu said, adding that eight brigands were arrested during the operations.
The operation resulted in the recovery of two motorcycles, three Lexus SUVs, one AK-47 rifle, one AKMS rifle, and three other weapons, according to the army.
In a separate operation, according to Mr. Nwachukwu, the army raided a second IPOB camp at Mmiata Anam, a neighbourhood in the same Anambra West Local Government Area.
According to the army spokesperson, the troops "neutralised one IPOB fighter, while another was captured alive."
“The troops also recovered one AK-47 rifle, one dane gun and police uniforms,†he said.
Residents of the South-east have been urged by the army to assist and cooperate with the military and other security services in their efforts to combat insecurity in the area.
