Nigerian female soldier alleges sexual harassment by senior officers
In response to a soldier's claim that she is being sexually harassed and is not getting paid, the Nigerian Army has taken action.
In a widely shared video, a female soldier stationed in Lagos State voiced concerns about senior army commanders harassing and threatening to kill her because she turned down their advances.
Col. IB Abdulkareem, Col. GS Ogor, and Brig. Gen. IB Solebo were the names she gave them.
She claimed that ever since she turned down their approaches for sex in 2022 and was transferred to Cantonment Medical Centre in Ojo, Lagos, they had been abusing her.
She claimed that she had been locked up multiple times without cause, kicked out of her flat, detained for a month without medicine at a mental health facility, and had had her account frozen since February 2023 without pay.
In response, the Army stated it was looking into the claims in a brief comment on its official X website.
It added that it is committed to serve the country with honour and integrity and encouraged Nigerians to hold off on passing judgement too quickly.
“We assure the general public that the Nigerian Army as an institution is committed to upholding the integrity and morals of its personnel and as such appropriate actions will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
“We urge the public to allow the investigative process to take its course and refrain from making hasty judgments,†it said.
