Nigerian lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, sues Akwa Ibom Chief Judge

Inibehe Effiong, a human rights attorney, has filed a lawsuit against Akwa Ibom State Chief Judge Ekaette Obot for failing to provide him with documents of the court proceedings and his conviction order despite numerous requests.

The human rights attorney petitioned the Federal High Court in Uyo to order Justice Obot to give him a copy of the judgment from July 27.

The judge's reluctance to release the conviction order was also challenged by Effiong as being illegitimate and unconstitutional since it breached Section 36 (7) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

It was stated in a court document provided to The PUNCH by the plaintiff's attorney, Femi Falana, that Effiong was entitled to a copy of the verdict within seven days of the case's end.

According to The PUNCH, Justice Obot remanded Effiong to prison on July 27 for alleged court contempt.

He completed the first two weeks of his 30-day term at the Nigeria Correctional Service's Ikot Ekpene Custodial Center.

Later, he was moved to the Uyo Custodial Center where he completed the remaining days.
