Nigerian troops rescue Zamfara university students
After engaging terrorists in gun combat early on Sunday, soldiers with Operation Hadarin Daji were able to free the Federal University Gusau, Zamfara State, students who had been kidnapped.
Four students were taken away on Saturday when terrorists broke into off-campus housing in Sabon Garin Damba, Gusau.
In fewer than 30 days, the university's off-campus dorms would be attacked a second time by terrorists.
Ibrahim Yahaya, the spokesman for the 1 Brigade Nigerian Army in Gusau, claimed that while two of the students managed to flee amid a firefight between the military and the terrorists, the two others were saved by the soldiers.
“This was achieved as the troops responded swiftly to distress calls on the kidnapped students by terrorists. Troops immediately mobilised and formed a blocking position at a possible withdrawal route which led to a heavy gun duel with the terrorists.
“Troops’ superiority forced the terrorists to abandon the victims and fled. During the encounter with the terrorists around 12 a.m., two of the students were able to escape while other two students – a male and a female – were safely rescued by the troops,†Mr Ibrahim, a captain, said.
