Nine children dead, not less than 50 injured in Sudan's war– UNICEF
Nine children have been confirmed dead and 50 more have been injured in the conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Special Forces (RSF) in Sudan, according to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
On the sixth day of the fighting that started on Saturday, UNICEF said that some children are detained in schools and care facilities for protection as hospitals were compelled to evacuate children as shelling grew closer.
“The fighting has disrupted critical, life-saving care for an estimated 50,000 severely acutely malnourished children. These vulnerable children need ongoing, round-the-clock care, which is being put at risk by the escalating violence,†UNICEF said in a statement.
The UN humanitarian agency added, “Children will continue to pay the price†if the violence is not stopped, BBC reported.
Insulin and vaccines worth more than $40 million (£32 million) are at risk of spoilage as a result of the current Sudan crisis' extraordinary power outages.
Currently, the violence has claimed the lives of over 270 individuals since Saturday, according to a statement from the US embassy in Khartoum.
