NLC begins two-day nationwide strike

According to The PUNCH, some government ministries, departments, and offices in Abuja are currently closed in support of the two-day nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress.

The Federal Secretariat and other significant locations, including the well-known radio building, which houses certain institutions under the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, were empty when our correspondent visited them on Tuesday morning since the personnel had opted to stay at home.

Banks that were situated in the surveyed areas were also secured.

When our correspondent visited one of the big commercial banks in the Federal Secretariat, he was informed that there would be no banking activity because of the NLC's proclaimed strike.

According to The PUNCH, the NLC said in a statement released on Friday that it had made the decision after the Tinubu-led Federal Government failed to engage stakeholders in organised labour in a dialogue about efforts to mitigate the effects of the removal of subsidies on Premium Motor Spirit, more commonly known as petrol, on the "poor masses." The statement was jointly signed by the NLC's national president, Joe Ajaero, and secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja.

In August, organised labour already organised a single-day protest that shut down operations in significant cities throughout the nation.

The centre listed a number of additional reasons why it would organise its members for the nationwide strike, including the police's alleged siege of the National Union of Road Transport Workers' national headquarters, alleged worker rights abuses in Imo state, interference in trade union affairs by the Abia State government, and the proposed demolition by Nyesom Wike, the new minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
