NRC suspends staff for collecting money from passengers without ticket

A staff member was suspended by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) for misbehaviour and disregarding the organization's established regulations.

Mahmood Yakub, the Deputy Director of Public Relations, stated this in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos.

According to Mr. Yakub, the NRC management suspended the insubordinate employees as a result of a popular viral video on multiple social media sites.

He said that the film had captured employees haggling with passengers on a Lagos-Ibadan Train Service (LITS) to accept payment in exchange for boarding without a valid ticket.

“The General Public is invited to note that the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) seriously condemns such act of misconduct which is a flagrant disobedience to laid down rules and utter betrayal of the confidence reposed on such workers.

“NRC also condemns such an act, especially at this time that the Federal Government is making all efforts at revitalising and modernising the Corporation.

“The Corporation has therefore placed the identified erring officers on immediate suspension pending the outcome of the in-depth investigation by the Management Committee set up to look into the issue.

“This misconduct is regrettable and unacceptable as it negates the tenets and norms of the Corporation,” Mr Yakubu said.

He gave the public the assurance that any staff member who displayed such an unwholesome attitude or damaged the company's reputation would not be tolerated or treated lightly.
