NSCDC arrests two suspected vandals in Kano
A suspected vandal of the Juma'at mosque has been taken into custody by Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operations at the Yankaba Eastern Bypass Roundabout in Kano.
In a statement issued on Monday, Ibrahim Abdullahi, the NSCDC Kano State Command's Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest.
He claimed that the suspect, 35-year-old Murtala Aliyu Muhd, who lived in the Dawakin Dakata neighbourhoods in the Nassarawa Local Government Area in Kano, was captured late at night after breaking through the window of the Dakata Juma'at mosque.
“The suspect successfully stole and made away with one of the mosque’s solar energy batteries, which supplies electricity to the worship centre.
“The following day, while attempting to sell the battery at the market, he was intercepted and arrested by personnel of the Corps on security duty at a checkpoint. He failed to provide a satisfactory explanation of where he obtained the battery or was taking it,” the statement said.
Additionally, it was mentioned that the same person had just admitted to stealing more than 300,000 Naira from the mosque. Likewise, Musbahu Sani, 19, a suspected vandal from Tarauni Local Government Area's Darmanawa quarters, was also taken into custody.
Abdullahi claims that Sani was taken into custody while in possession of sizable armoured cables that were allegedly taken during a vandalism incident.
According to him, the suspect acknowledged taking the wires out of a transformer at the Darmanawa quarters during questioning.
“He was taking the cables to market when he was captured by civil defence personnel along Court Road, Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano State,” Abdullahi said.
Both individuals would be charged in court for proper prosecution after the inquiry, he continued.
