NSCDC uncovers criminal ring in Abuja, arrests 10 suspects
In a high-stakes operation, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)'s elite Special Intelligence Squad (SIS) and Crack Squad arrested ten people involved in theft, damage, and kidnapping, dealing a serious blow to criminal networks in Abuja and neighboring states.
The NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, ordered the arrests in order to safeguard vital infrastructure, national assets, and human life.
Six suspects were arrested for stealing government property and damaging electrical and communication systems, according to a statement released yesterday by NSCDC spokesman Afolabi Babawale.
Large amounts of water pipes, ropes, heavy-duty hacksaws, and armored cables were among the items found within.
Suleiman Ibrahim was apprehended at Jabi Park with stolen cables and tools, Umar Rabiu (18) was apprehended at Berger Junction with substantial recovered materials, and Muktar Yusuf (22) and Ibrahim Haruna (18) were charged with theft and sabotage of infrastructure, he added.
He also said that four other suspects, including Ali Musa of Garko and Musa Juli, a Niger native working illegally in Nasarawa State, had been arrested for kidnapping, livestock rustling, and other connected crimes. Murtala Ibrahim, 22, and Umar Abdullahi, 30, were detained as additional suspects in connection with theft and kidnapping.
Apollo Dandaura, the head of the SIS, revealed that some suspects were armed and others were apprehended in manhole channels near Berger Roundabout.
The dangers encountered by NSCDC staff in the field were highlighted by one high-stakes incident in which a suspect was neutralized during a gunfight with operatives. All accused have admitted their involvement and will stand trial in appropriate courts, he revealed.
The NSCDC praised the public for contributing actionable intelligence that made the operation successful and reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against threats to government property, vandalism, and sabotage.
The Corps urged people to keep helping security forces fight crime and emphasized that safeguarding people, property, and national infrastructure is still of utmost importance.
