NURTW National president Tajudeen Baruwa, three others arrested
In an unexpected turn of events, the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has revealed Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa, its national president, and three other leaders had been detained without provable cause.
The NURTW National Secretariat in Garki 2, Abuja is where the arrests are said to have taken place on Friday night.
Mr. Isa Ore, the Deputy President of the Union, who informed journalists of the development on Saturday in Abuja, expressed dismay at the arrest.
“We were preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected National Administrative Council members when the police arrived, asked us to leave the premises, and proceeded to seal off the secretariat,†said Ore.
He clarified that the union had not been provided a justification for the action, which further added to the confusion.
The tense situation was described by Mr. Ore, who said, "We were shocked to see the policemen in their number locking our secretariat without giving them a reason."
The General Secretary, Anthony Asogwa Chukudi, the National Trustee, Olayi Odion, the Principal Assistant Secretary, Abdulrasak Yemi, and the National President, Baruwa are among the officials who have been detained and are currently being held at the Wuse Zone 3 Division.
The union's National Secretariat was immediately locked off in addition to the arrests, which further complicated the issue.
“They said it was an order from the above and they have detained our President and other leaders at Wuse police station,†Ore added.
The union has tried to contact the authorities to ask questions, but they have not responded.
“I have called the FCT Commissioner of police but he said he was not in town,†lamented Mr. Ore.
He claims that the union is still dedicated to working together with the authorities to find a quick solution to this troubling situation.
The NURTW is now in a condition of uncertainty as a result of the unexpected arrests and the sealing off of the secretariat.
The union is presently seeking more details and does not yet know what led to these extreme measures.
