Ogun govt seals 10 buildings for contravening building regulation laws

Ten structures in Ogun State have been sealed by the state's government, through the Building Production and Management Authority (OGBPMA), for allegedly breaking building regulation regulations. In Ilaro and Abeokuta, the buildings were sealed, and two owners of commercial buildings received notices. Speaking to reporters during an enforcement operation in Agbara, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, Acting General Manager of the Building Management Authority Engr. Olakunle Olaniran said the sealed buildings in Abeokuta included a house at Ibara and four others at Adatan, Abiola Way, and Ita-Eko, all within the State capital.

According to Olaniran, the sanctions came due to “contravention of planning permit, unauthorized construction, non-certification of the building process, lack of professional guidance and use of poor building materials.”

He disclosed that, “One of the buildings sealed in Abeokuta obtained a permit for a storey residential development, but commenced a development of a four-storey building, which shows intent for commercial use.”

The acts, he said, are “inimical to proper planning, as the specifications for commercial use must factor key requirements like parking spaces, among other things,” stressing that “such sharp practices will not be condoned in the state.”

Olaniran described the enforcement operation in Ilaro by saying that in the headquarters of the Yewa South Local Government, two petrol stations, two businesses, and one hotel had been sealed.

Although agencies had been educated and made aware of the need to build properly and secure the requisite building approvals, Olaniran criticized the illegal and unplanned developments in communities.

He highlighted that the agency will continue to work hard to ensure that building and construction projects are completed in accordance with the state's current legislation.
