Ogun govt threatens to shut down markets over poor waste disposal
The Ogun State Government has warned to close any market that is shown to have unsanitary conditions and inappropriate garbage disposal.
At a meeting with the Executive and members of the Ogun State Association of Market men and women in Abeokuta, the Special Advisor to the State Governor on Environment, Hon. Abayomi Semako Hunye, revealed that the action had become necessary in order to stop the cholera outbreak that is currently wreaking havoc across the nation.
In his opinion, the current cholera outbreak that the nation is fighting demands for appropriate waste disposal and general cleanliness in all markets. Since markets serve as gathering places for the purchase of goods like food, supplies, and other necessities, they must always be immaculate.
Hunye, who also serves as the Managing Director of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), went on to say that poor waste management in marketplaces attracts rodents, flies, and vectors that infect goods sold to the general public, causing unwelcome diseases among the local population.
