Ogun police arrest 19 suspected cultists

The purported leader of the Eiye Confraternity, Ogunnibi Hammed, was detained by the Ogun State Police Command, along with 18 other people who allegedly confessed to belonging to other cults.

Hammed was detained on Sunday, according to the command's spokeswoman, Omolola Odutola, who revealed this in a statement made accessible to journalists in Abeokuta on Monday.

Odutola clarified that Hammed was arrested as a result of the tactical action that took place on Sunday.

She pointed out that the prominent cultist had gained notoriety for his role in horrifying assaults on competing cult organisations in the state.

The Special Weapons and Tactics team, the Anti-Cultism Unit, and the Obalende Division of the Force collaborated on the operation, according to Odutola.

The suspect cultists who had been terrorising residents of several places, including Odogbolu, Sagamu, Ijebu Ode, and the Ilishan area of the state, were the focus of the operation, she said, which the police had carried out based on intercepted intelligence.

Among those apprehended were Sodipo Azeez, also known as Bintobo; Ilori Gbenga; Lamina Yusuf; Kolawole Rasaq; Adelaja Otusanya; Adeyemi Soneye; Oseni Toheeb; Thank God Naba; Lekan Qudus; Adelusi Omotayo, Timothy Monday, Ayomide Ishmael, Oboje Jeremiah, Ayoola Oladayo, Jacob Chidi, John Innocent, Ayangbile Victor, and Jacob Sunday.

Odutola stated that Abiodun Alamutu, the commissioner of police, has mandated an immediate probe into those detained.

”As the investigation progresses, the police will provide updates to the public regarding any relevant developments in this case,” she said.
