Ogun police arrest suspect over theft of patients' phones

Ridwan Akintoye, a suspect who was believed to specialise in snatching patients' mobile phones after their admission at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, has been detained by the Ogun State Police Command.

Our correspondent also discovered that Akintoye's theft did not exclude people who had come to visit their loved ones in the sick bay because the medical centre was abuzz with news of several phone thefts.

According to information obtained by PUNCH Metro, the suspect allegedly attended the hospital from Lagos while pretending to be a volunteer blood donor and preying on gullible patients and their loved ones.

The management of the medical facility was obliged to install undercover surveillance on the property due to the rising occurrences of phone theft, according to an eyewitness who declined to be named in the media.

The surveillance, according to the eyewitness who spoke to our correspondent, was put in place to keep a watch on what people were doing inside and outside of the building.

The 24-year-old was alleged to have been exposed while snatching several unwary victims' cell phones while being unaware that there was covert surveillance in the neighbourhood.

Additionally, according to information provided by our correspondent, Akintoye left the area when he thought he had been exposed.

Omolola Odutola, the state police public relations officer, said in a statement that the suspect had admitted to travelling from Lagos State to the location to commit the heist. Odutola confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Monday.

Odutola said, “The phones he stole included the Infinix Hot 9 and Android TCL belonging to Hameed Aderibigbe and Folarin Israel. We arrested him when he was fleeing the premises.”
