Ogun State government declares August 20 work-free day to mark Isese festival

In honor of this year's Isese Day celebration, the Ogun State Government has proclaimed Thursday, August 20, 2026, a public holiday.

Special Information and Strategy Advisor, Hon. According to Kayode Akinmade, the government claims that the declaration highlights the administration's dedication to protecting and advancing Yoruba culture, heritage, and traditional values.

Recall that in 2023, the Ogun State House of Assembly passed a resolution designating August 20 as a public holiday, with Governor Dapo Abiodun's support.

Accoeding him, “the government said Isese Day provides an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion to honour their ancestors, observe traditional rites and promote the values and teachings embedded in their spiritual and cultural practices”.

He pointed out that in addition to fostering a sense of camaraderie among practitioners, the ceremony gives the general public a chance to recognize and honor the rich cultural legacy of the Yoruba people.

The statement claims that the administration's recognition of the value of culture and traditional institutions in maintaining the state's identity and fostering social cohesion is reflected in the celebration of Isese Day.

As a result, the government asked citizens to observe the holiday in a responsible and peaceful manner while honoring the rights, customs, and beliefs of others.
