Olubadan of Ibadan Oba Moshood Olalekan dies at 81
A traditional Yoruba monarch has away after only two years in power, causing sadness among Nigerians in the southern part of the nation.
After a protracted career in education and politics, Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun held a brief reign as the Olubadan of Ibadan, a city in southwest Nigeria.
His most important political position was as a senator representing Oyo State's central region, which he also occupied as king.
As per Islamic customs, the 81-year-old's remains is scheduled to be buried on Friday.
As usual, he will be buried in the city, at his family's compound.
"He was a peaceful ruler who [had] listening ears and worked for the peace of the land," said regional senator Seyi Makinde as he announced the death on Thursday.
"King Balogun's reign brought a lot of development to the city of Ibadan in particular and Oyo state in general."
In March 2022, he was anointed and made the 42nd Olubadan of Ibadanland after Oba Saliu Akanmu Adetunji passed away a week earlier.
Prior to that, he held a PhD in philosophy and was a lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria, one of the oldest universities in the nation.
