Omobayo Godwin inaugurated as Edo new Deputy Governor
Soon after Philip Shaibu was impeached by the state house of assembly, Omobayo Godwins took office as the deputy governor of Edo. The 37-year-old, who was grinning broadly, was sworn in on Monday at 1:40 p.m. by Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the Chief Judge of Edo State.
On a day that started with Shaibu's removal from office as the state's deputy governor, Omobayo's inauguration at the Edo State Government House in Benin City represents a significant turn in the state's political narrative.
A lively audience awaited an ecstatic Omobayo in one of the Government House's hallways after he took the oath of office. Omobayo was wearing a red traditional headgear and a white kaftan.
There were many well-wishers, sympathisers, and prominent Edo State figures present at the ceremony. Following Shaibu's impeachment for disclosing classified state information, he was sworn in shortly after, putting an end to months of power struggles between him and Governor Obaseki about the former's pursuit of the state's governorship.
The parliamentarians on Monday approved the report of a commission tasked with looking into claims of misbehaviour by Shaibu, marking a significant turning point in the history of the South-South state.
Shaibu criticised the parliamentarians right away after being fired and thought that his impeachment would endanger the nation's democracy.
