Ondo Polytechnic lecturers commence strike over unpaid salaries
To protest the non-payment of their 13 months' salary, lecturers at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo, Ondo State, have started participating in industrial action.
In order to do this, the disgruntled lecturers made a commitment not to take part in the school's upcoming first semester exams next Tuesday under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic, RUGIPO chapter.
This was stated in a communiqué that was released following the union convention, which took place on Thursday.
Arikawe Ade, the union's chairman, and Fapetu Damilola, its secretary, both signed the communiqué.
The union's members reportedly unanimously decided to stop providing services at the conclusion of their congress, therefore the strike officially started on Friday.
The communiqué read in part, “We want the payment in full of all outstanding (13 months) salary arrears owed the staff of the institution. The congress wishes to strongly emphasise that the decision above is binding on all the financial members of the union.â€
It also stated that the union had considered the difficulty attending to their official tasks had been caused by the present fuel price before making its decision.
