One arrested for destroying barricade in Lagos
On Wednesday, representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Environment announced that they had taken into custody a man, whose identity was not released, on suspicion of damaging iron barriers located in the Odo Iya Alaro district of the state.
The ministry's director of public affairs, Kunle Adesina, revealed that the suspect was taken into custody on Saturday while defacing the iron reinforcement that acted as a barrier between the System One Channel and the Ogudu Garden Valley Scheme.
He continued by saying that the suspect admitted during questioning that he frequently sold damaged goods to mobile scrap merchants.
Adesina said, “Another vandal was on Saturday apprehended at Ogudu while vandalising the iron reinforcement in the concrete barrier that demarcates the Ogudu Garden Valley scheme from System One Channel (Odo Iya Alaro).
“The suspect confessed that he had engaged in the act once alongside some accomplices who are on the run.
“He stated that he usually sold the vandalised iron at a giveaway amount to mobile scrap buyers.”
The suspect has been turned over to the police for additional investigation and prosecution, the Public Affairs director stated.
“He has been handed over to officers of Ojota Police Station for further interrogation and prosecution.”
State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab responded to the arrest by urging the populace to take ownership of public infrastructure in order to prevent criminals from damaging public property.
The commissioner emphasised that the damaged barrier was a crucial component of the state drainage system and that those who damage it will face consequences.
