Organ Harvesting Scandal: Smart Adeyemi says senators will not abandon Ekweremadu
Kogi West Senator, Smart Adeyemi, said senators would not let down former Senate Deputy Speaker Ike Ekweremadu amid the organ harvesting controversy.
Adeyemi said senators were scrambling to support Ekweremadu despite allegations of organ harvesting.
Ekweremadu and his wife Beatrice have been accused of trafficking an alleged minor into the UK for organ harvesting.
The couple was charged with conspiracy to arrange and facilitate another person's travel for exploitation, namely organ harvesting.
A London court denied the couple bail and jailed them, despite pleading not guilty to the charges against them.
Speaking to Channels Television on Friday, Adeyemi said: "This issue is very unfortunate. It's something that worries everyone in the Senate because he's one of us; but more important is the fact that I know him to be a man of great worth and strength of character; a man with a very high moral foundation.
But other than that, I think it's too early to start blaming whether he's guilty or not. All of us who are colleagues feel the pain and we stand with Ike Ekweremadu. We will not leave him alone in this.
"A whole bunch of senators are struggling to see what they can do by providing moral support and any other support needed.
“But we want to know all the details of the case. The problems are that the victim was not of age, he was under 18, so it could not be seen that he had the right to decide if he could offer his organs for someone else.â€
