Osun resident Segun Olowookere sentenced to death for stealing chicken regains freedom
Segun Olowookere, a native of Osun State, was freed from prison after being found guilty of stealing a chicken and eggs in 2010 and given a death by hanging sentence.
Olowookere was one of 53 prisoners pardoned by Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on December 26.
This ruling comes after Olowookere's parents claimed that some state police officers had illegally arrested him in a widely shared interview with Nigerian actress Biola Adebayo.
According to his father, Olanrewaju, a divisional police officer (DPO) asked for money to free him, but his son was wrongfully imprisoned since he was unable to pay.
The actress and Olowookere were spotted in a video taken on Monday in front of Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison.
She expressed gratitude to the governor of Osun State for pardoning Olowookere.
She said that jail officials praised Olowookere for his exemplary behaviour during his imprisonment and thanked Nigerians for their support.
“This is Segun Olowookere, we are just leaving Kirikiri. He is finally out of the correctional centre. Thank you so much for the love and support that we got,” she said.
“Segun is a very good guy. The testimonies at the correctional centre were amazing. We are glad that he is out now for good.
“Thank you to Governor Ademola Adeleke, we are grateful.”
