Pelosi's Visit To Taiwan: China threatens to sanction

The US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her immediate family members will face sanctions, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, for insisting on visiting China's Taiwan region despite China's grave concerns and adamant rejection.

According to the Foreign Ministry Spokesperson, the decision threatens peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, gravely meddles in China's domestic affairs, and violates China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

As Pelosi visited Taiwan earlier on Wednesday, China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, threatened that Beijing will punish the island nation.

On Wednesday, Tsai Ing-wen, President of Taiwan, and Pelosi met while she was on an official visit to the island that had sparked China's wrath.

The American senator visited Taiwan's parliament when she was there, making her the highest-ranking US official to travel there in the previous 25 years.

China cautioned the US against allowing Pelosi to visit the autonomous island, stating that it was seen as a renegade area that would eventually be merged with the mainland.

"What a terrible farce this is. Under the pretence of "democracy," the United States is infringing on Chinese sovereignty, according to Wang. Those who offend China will face consequences, Wang said on the sidelines of an ASEAN summit in Phnom Penh.

The president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, responded to the threat by saying that the 23 million people who live on the island would not be intimidated.

"Despite purposefully increased military threats, Taiwan will not yield. At a gathering with Pelosi in Taipei, Tsai declared, "We will... continue to hold the line of defence for democracy.

She also expressed her gratitude to the 82-year-old US lawmaker for "taking concrete steps to demonstrate your steadfast support for Taiwan at this crucial time."

China opposes nations having diplomatic exchanges with Taipei and works to keep Taiwan isolated on the international scene.

The most prominent elected US official to visit Taiwan in the previous 25 years is Pelosi, who is second in line for the presidency.

At the gathering with Tsai, Pelosi declared, "Today, our group... came to Taiwan to make unambiguously clear we would not abandon our commitment to Taiwan."
