Phone snatchers to face death punishment in Kano
Kano State's governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, has criticized the death punishment for phone snatchers.
On Sunday, Ganduje issued a proclamation through the Kano State Security Council designating phone snatching as an armed robbery punishable by the death penalty for anyone found committing the crime.
Malam Muhammad Garba, the departing Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, revealed this in a press release sent to Kano-area journalists.
According to him, the council, which Ganduje presided over during its final meeting, underlined that the act's recent commission has reached alarming levels, necessitating the adoption of extreme measures.
Garba added that the council had decided to create a special unit within the security apparatus to deal with the threat and other criminal activity.
The council stated that all essential steps had been made to ensure a peaceful ceremony and advised miscreants who would use the occasion to commit violence in the name of celebrations to refrain from such an act, the commissioner continued.
“Destruction of properties belonging to the public, individual or the opposition will not be tolerated as adequate measures have been taken to deal with such act decisively,†the statement added.
He claimed that Ganduje emphasized the necessity of an orderly transfer of power in the state and asked for a peaceful ceremony during the meeting. He commended the state's security agencies for their ongoing support during his administration and asked them to keep up the pace.
Almost all of the heads of the security agencies, as well as other council members, were present at the meeting.
