Pirates attack boat, abduct 10 in Rivers
On Monday, a passenger boat in Rivers State's Bonny river was ambushed by suspected pirates, leading to the kidnapping of ten passengers. It was learnt that the tragedy happened around 10 kilometres into the boat's journey from Bonny to Port Harcourt.
The state's maritime workers union has verified the occurrence, even though specifics could not be determined at the time this report was filed.
The event was reported to reporters in Port Harcourt on Monday by Israel Pepple, the State Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Rivers Commercial District.
Pepple stated that when the alleged pirates struck, the kidnapped boat passengers were en route from Bonny Island to Port Harcourt.
While he urged on the government and relevant authorities to bolster security in the waterways to prevent ongoing attacks on the sea, he also stated that the incident has been reported to the police.
He stated, “As I speak to you right now, ten persons have been kidnapped while travelling from Bonny to Port Harcourt. And the others are still afloat in the River waiting for rescue.
“I said let me just draw the attention of the Rivers State Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and the Commissioner of Police that we visited last week that this is what has happened this morning again.”
